Janet P. Dana Obituary - July 19, 2012

Janet P. Dana, 69, passed away tragically in a car accident on Thursday July 19, 2012 along with her daughter-in-law, Laurie Dana and two granddaughters, Caitlyn and Lauryn Dana.

Janet was born January 18, 1943, in Malone, the daughter of the late Raymond and Jean (Tryon) Noreault. She was a 1961 graduate of Winooski High School and a 1965 graduate of UVM where she obtained a degree in Education. In 1965, she began teaching at Brushton Moira Central School, teaching in the English Department until her retirement in 1999. On August 20, 1966 she was united into marriage to Donald Dana at St. Stevenís Church in Winooski, Vermont.

Janet retired in 1999 following a long career teaching English at Brushton-Moira Central School where she was involved in many student activities. She was a representative for Franklin and Clinton Counties in the New York State English Council for several years. Janet was an active member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association (NYSRTA); she was the public relations chairperson for the Northern Zone of that organization. She was instrumental in the founding of the Town of Moira Historical Association. Janet would say, ďThat building was just sitting there; I had to do something about itĒ. Janet was the past-president, a current Board Member and also editor of the Societyís newsletter. She was the driving force behind the establishment of Moiraís annual Heritage Day Celebration. Janet was the founder of the Northern Lights Book Club. In addition to stimulating intellectual conversation at book club, the group had yearly literary travel adventures. Janet was also active in St. Maryís Parish of Brushton. She was a board member of the Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H. Janetís passion for travel was infectious and spread to her family and friends over the years. For nearly 50 years, Janet and Donald and their family continued an annual reunion with Donaldís Cornell classmates and their families. Gardening, decorating, baking and singing were a few of her many hobbies. She loved to lend her voice at every opportunity.

Besides her husband Donald she is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey Dana of North Lawrence and Alan Dana of Plattsburgh, a daughter Beth and her husband Chris Kemp of North Lawrence, two brothers, James (Judy) Noreault and Richard (Lorna) Noreault, both of Colchester, Vermont, as well as many nieces and nephews including Carla and Robby Mazza, and their daughters Lindsi and Lauryn; Jimmer and Jen Noreault, and their children Caleb, Jacob and Taylor; Scott and Kristy Noreault, and their daughter Lilly; Trisha and Matt Conti, and their children Eli and Ava. She is also survived by numerous cousins.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by numerous aunts and uncles including her great aunt, Iris Collins.

One of the greatest joys in Janetís life was the loving time spent with her precious granddaughters, nieces and nephews. No event was too inconsequential for Janet to attend and offer her unwavering support. Thereís hardly a family in her community that she didnít touch in some way. Janet loved feeding and nurturing people with her desserts.

Memorial contributions in Janetís honor may be made to The Town of Moira Historical Association, P.O. Box 75, Moira, NY 12957.

Calling hours will be held Monday (July 23, 2012) from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at the Flint Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday (July 24, 2012) at 11am at St. Maryís Church in Brushton with the Revs. Christopher Lobby and Gerry Giroux concelebrating the Mass.

Arrangements are with the Flint Funeral Home, Moira, NY.

I would like to say how very sorry I am about Janet's passing. I am sorry I could not attend services, and will remember Janet very fondly and with a bit of a smile when I think of her. We always had a nice visit when we would run into each other, usually about grandchildren, and I know she absolutely adored hers. I will remember her as a " straight shooter " , you always knew you would get the truth about what she was thinking. I like that in a person, that honesty and straight forwardness. There is not a lot one can say , I know, but I just want you all to know that I am thinking about you and praying for all of you. Sincerely, Kathy Lahendro

Dear Dana Family,
My heart and prayers go out to each and everyone of you Nothing can be said to ease your minds and I know loss and how it all seems unreal. Mrs Dana was an amazing woman and teacher she left her mark behind in the lives of each and every student who's lives she touched she was not only a teacher but a mentor she cared and was there for us to help us through any of our major to silly teenage problems she encouraged us all to do our best .I have never had the honor of meeting Laurie but I did those sweet girls when they would go visit their great grandpa They were the sweetest girls ever always smiling and laughing. In a horrible event these are the things we must remember.I truly weep from the bottom my heart for you all god bless and try to stay strong as possible and don't be afraid to lean on each other or a friend.

Janet was my HS English teacher and I recall some fond memories of that even though well over 40 years ago. Butch and his parents were close family friends with our family growing up in Moira. Janet will be missed by many, hold your memories of her close to your heart. I always admired her honesty, you never had to wonder what side of an issue she was on, just ask her. Loved the many conversations we had over the years about education, kids, family and community. No matter where you saw her, she always had time to say hello and see how you were doing, that's what I loved about her. I will miss my friend and colleague.
